What is dental bonding?

If you are looking for the perfect smile but your teeth aren’t cooperating, you might want to consider dental bonding. Dental bonding is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that can repair chipped and broken teeth, fill gaps between teeth, make teeth look longer and make discoloured teeth look whiter. Dental bonding is done by bonding a composite resin to the teeth.

What is the procedure for bonding?

When you come to Devon Neighbourhood Dental for dental bonding, we first get an idea of what you are looking for from the procedure. We then give you an oral examination and let you know if the procedure can be carried out and if you will get the desired results.

During the procedure, a shade card will be used to match the colour of the resin to your teeth. The tooth that is being treated will then be prepared for the bonding by etching it with a mild solution of phosphoric acid. The roughened surface of the tooth will help the resin to adhere better to it. Next, a conditioning liquid is applied to the tooth.

Once the tooth has been prepared, the composite resin, which at this point is moldable like putty, is placed on the tooth. The soft resin is shaped to look like a natural tooth and then hardened with either a laser or ultraviolet light. The composite resin is then polished so that is has a natural shine like the rest of your teeth. The whole procedure takes about half an hour per tooth.
