Why is oral hygiene important?

Oral hygiene is necessary not only for the health of our teeth and gums but for our overall well-being. While regular brushing and flossing are important, getting professional teeth cleaning at least once a year helps to get rid of plaque buildup. Because our mouths come in contact with food regularly, plenty of bacteria grow here. Plaque is a colony of bacteria and can be hard to clean in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth.

When plaque is left on the teeth too long, it hardens to form tartar. Only a dentist or an oral hygienist will be able to clean tartar once it has formed. Ignoring plaque and tartar formation could lead to more serious problems like dental cavities and gum diseases. Getting your teeth cleaned professionally once or twice a year can help protect teeth and gums from getting diseased, and preventing tooth loss in the long run.

How is teeth

cleaning done?

When you come to Devon Neighbourhood Dental for teeth cleaning, we will first get your medical history, find out if you have any pre-existing medical conditions and if you have any drug allergies. You will then receive a full oral examination during which we check for gum disease, cavities or any other oral and dental problems. If we do find any other problems, we will advise you on further action that needs to be taken.

If there are no additional problems, the teeth cleaning can proceed. The dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from the teeth using a tool called a scaler. If the plaque and tartar are minimal, this should not cause you any discomfort. More extensive plaque and tartar buildup will take a little longer to clean and might cause some sensitivity in the teeth.

Next, an electric brush and granular toothpaste are used to brush and polish your teeth. Any plaque and tartar left behind will be cleaned out during this brushing. The toothpaste has a nice minty flavour and will leave your mouth feeling clean and fresh after you rinse it out.

The hygienist will then floss your teeth and remove any food or material trapped between your teeth that hasn’t yet been cleaned out. Finally, you will receive a fluoride rinse, and a fluoride gel will be applied to your teeth. The fluoride helps strengthen your teeth.

The great part about getting a fluoride treatment at Devon Neighbourhood Dental is that we give 50% of what we earn to a local charity. You can get healthy teeth and do your bit for society all in one go.
